Pregame Like an Adult

All the way through college I pregamed with alcohol. It wasn't until after I began working and made some real money that my friends and I were introduced to pills, then of course cocaine, followed by a long period where we all got either sober, into a serious relationship, or both. Now the only thing that gets me going is home invasion.

If you do it right, it takes less time than beer pong and it's completely free– which is great if you're trying to offset the cost of a babysitter. Stepping inside the home of a friend-of-a-friend uninvited is simply the best upper you'll ever take. It's difficult to overstate the thrill of jiggling their doorknob at 11:30pm to see if they leave it unlocked, then finding your way in the dark to their kitchen to call an Uber.

Are they home? Are they awake? Do they own a firearm? Will they continue to let their children play with yours after this profoundly bizarre and unsettling incident? These are the questions that rush through your head as you tiptoe around their house before heading to the club. It's a potent combination of shame, panic, and dread that keeps you awake no matter how early you were up with the baby.

My wife likes to leave a bathroom sink running like the guys from Home Alone did. She has a real problem. I just try to be aware that, like anything else, this ritual will likely escalate before I'm capable of admitting that I have a problem. But, I think that writing in my journal from a neighbor's master bathroom is far from my rock bottom.

🎬 I caved and bought Michael Clayton. As promised, I'm sharing the stuff here that I'm currently using in my writing and this is one of them. I can't stop watching this movie. I've seen it many, many, times, and each time I become more puzzled at how Tony Gilroy pulled it off (just think about how you see the explosion before you hear it). I was in the middle of watching it again as August ended and September began, and it fell off the face of the streaming universe. So, I bought it... and now I'm in another black hole of watching it on repeat. If you haven't seen it, check out this brilliant scene from the opening.
