Some Trains Aren't Made to Stop
The customer service person on the phone had the kind of Israeli accent that isn't fun or endearing. It's just, like, super ethnic.
"What I'm trying to tell you," I told her, for the millionth time, "is that I signed up by mistake."
"And what I'm trying to tell you," she told me, "is that it doesn't absolve you of your moral obligation to keep making meals for these people."
In my community, when someone has a baby you make them what's called a "mealtrain." It's, literally, a train of meals. Except there's no literal train. It's just a website with a calendar that lets you sign up to sponsor a meal so they don't have to worry about cooking.
"The issue," I continued, "is not with me or my moral obligation. It's your junky website. I only signed up for one night. You're the ones who put my name in every available slot in perpetuity."
It's been nearly ten months of making food for this awful couple and they refuse to let me off the hook. Their daughter is already walking. Legally, I’m told, I have recourse. But socially, missing a night would be suicide.
"Perhaps you could cut a deal with them?"
This woman can’t say it, but I already know the truth. Don't I? God is the only one who can extract me from this charitable hellscape. Or, perhaps, it’s the devil who can save me. Until then, I beg you, please sign up for my mealtrain and contribute.
🎥 With The Dropout, Superpumped, and WeCrashed all out at the same time, it seems like the business/tech genre might be here to stay for a while. Do yourself a favor and skip all those, and instead watch one of the best ones ever made. It's a short movie called Margin Call, and it chronicles the 12-hours before the financial collapse of 2009. Man, I keep coming back to this one. Netflix, 1-hr-47-mins, drama.
📺 South Side is one of those shows I probably saw advertised a million times and fully ignored, assuming it was probably intended for a different audience. It indeed was; one whose heads were not up their own asses. Like all the greats (friends and tv shows), South Side has its very own sense of humor and inhabits its very own universe. Two eps in you'll be talking like its characters. 30-mins, comedy, HBO Max. #HoeIsLife
