Nothing Happened After 2004
Ever heard of Simulation-ists? The people who believe we’re living in a computer simulation and nothing that's ever happened to you is real? Well, my wife is like that, except she’s a 2004ist. She doesn’t believe that anything that happened after the year 2004 is real.
You wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at her. Her life just sort of looks, well, boring. She only listens to music we liked during our senior year of high school. She uses the internet exclusively to watch Sex and The City. She condescends anybody who uses social media and she hasn’t made a close friend in close to 20-years. She references teachers from our elementary school... a lot.
People wonder how we remain a couple, but I don’t what the big deal is. Lots of people live their lives the same way she does, they just don’t go to the trouble of establishing a 501(c)3 and declaring their lifestyle a religion. The tax benefits alone make it worthwhile.
The only part that gets under my skin is her inability to think anybody can ever change. In her mind, "once a bully, always a bully" and all that. If a friend of her's got bad grades in calculus, she can't wrap her head around how they might have become a competent pediatrician or a successful businesswoman.
But, what worries me most is, she must not think that she herself can change.
▶️ The pauses are fire. Youth pastors and outreach rabbis must train in the same facility.
🎥 Is Nathan Fielder's new show unethical? The Rehearsal tickles me in places I didn't know existed. However, some people are calling it unethical. The Red Scare is one of my favorite podcasts, from two incredibly insightful women from the former Soviet Union with surprising worldviews (one of them is in Succession). In this ep, they do a great breakdown of the pitfalls and redeeming qualities of the show. Start at 36:40.
